Connecting rod reconditioning

Connecting rod reconditioning at PDM begins with a thorough cleaning of the connecting rods.

The process

Connecting rod reconditioning

Cleaned rods are carefully inspected for big-end surface and diameter deterioration and for rod bolt thread damage. The rod cap is then precision ground, returned to the rod and torqued to the correct tension.

The rod bore is then precision machined to the correct size and roundness. PDM employs two methods for rod resizing — precision honing and precision boring. Selection of the resizing method depends on the degree of rod deterioration and on the rod application.

As a final step, all reconditioned rods are checked for correct alignment and aligned if necessary. PDM's rod boring machine is fully tooled to machine the correct centre-to-centre distance for any connecting rod.

Where this sits

Stage 02 — precision machining

  1. 01
    Teardown & cleaning

Complete disassembly, thermal and hot-tank cleaning, and inspection before any metal is cut.

  2. 02
    Precision machining

Boring, honing, grinding and align boring — every cut indexed to a true relationship.

  3. 03
    Final assembly

Careful assembly in a dedicated clean room, isolated from the rest of the operation.
