Block resurfacing

PDM uses several methods for surfacing parts. The choice of method depends on the part's type, size and composition.

The process

Block resurfacing

Blocks are surfaced on our state-of-the-art boring/surfacing mill. The mill's set-up allows the deck surface to be indexed with the cylinder bore, main bearing bore, and — in most automotive applications — the pan rail surface. The mill produces a block with a true deck-to-cylinder-to-main bearing relationship.

Cylinder heads are surfaced using either wet grinding, titanium coated carbide tool milling, or ceramic tool milling. Our surfacing machine is equipped with a milling head that was specially designed for engine part surfacing and which incorporates high tech carbide and ceramic tools.

For optimum surface finish, cast iron cylinder heads are surfaced using the ceramic tooling, aluminum heads are surfaced using the titanium/carbide tooling, and heads with pre-chambers and hardened areas are precision ground. PDM can handle hard to set-up parts with loose tolerances — exhaust manifolds, for instance — on our belt surfacer.
