Caterpillar engine machining

Caterpillar engines reach the shop from both the highway and the job site, and the two wear differently — highway engines come in on hours, machines come in on duty cycle and contamination.

Heavy cast components reward careful setup. Blocks are bored and honed to the correct wall finish and crosshatch so rings seat and hold oil film, and decks are milled with ceramic or carbide tooling indexed to the bores rather than to the old surface.
