The process
Crankshaft grinding & polishing
All crankshaft journals are carefully inspected with a micrometer to determine journal deterioration. Crankshafts are then inspected for straightness. Bent crankshafts may be straightened, depending on composition and deterioration, on our crankshaft straightening press.
We also recommend that all crankshafts be Magnaflux inspected for radial and axial fractures. Crankshafts are then ground to manufacturer's specifications and within accepted sizing tolerances. PDM's crankshaft grinding machine can hold journal dimensions to ±0.0001″ runout and ±0.0001″ taper, and in most applications there is no detectable deviation.
In all crankshaft grinds, the manufacturer's specified radius is maintained and oil hole chamfers are machined. The final step in the reconditioning process is a careful polishing of the crankshaft. All crankshafts are delivered packaged with a crankshaft installation checklist.
